Sorry, this hike is FULL. We will offer this geology hike again in Spring 2018.
Come “rock on” with us Saturday, November 11 at 9:00am for a special hike focusing on the GEOLOGY of the foothills. Our Big Hill Preserves contains unusual rock formations, the gently flowing Raccoon Creek, and spectacular panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley. This hike has become one of our most popular!
Docents Karl Mertz, Sarah Roeske, and Bob Niblack are trained geologists. Karl is a retired geology professor from Sac State & Sierra College. Sarah teaches and does research at UC Davis with a focus on fault zones. And Bob worked for the Department of Water Resources as a hydro-geologist. Together, these docents have many years of experience and have amazing knowledge to share with you.
DISTANCE: The hike will be approximately 4 miles, and may take 3-4 hours depending on the pace of the group and how many stops are made to look at the various rock formations along the way. This will be a slower paced hike with plenty of stops in between to look at the rocks.
DIFFICULTY: Moderate with uphill and downhill travel, on uneven ground and rough terrain.
This is a wilderness outing in a natural setting: there are no restrooms, benches, or water available. Please plan ahead and bring what you will need.
There is no charge for the hike, however a suggested donation of $10 per person is appreciated. Your donation helps us continue our work and allows us to keep offering these hikes and other events. We accept cash or checks at the event, or you can donate online via credit card at https://www.placerlandtrust.org/donate/ .
We have a “leave no trace” policy – if you pack it in, please pack it out.
Sorry, NO dogs are allowed on our Preserves, unless service animals.
We suggest you wear sturdy shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather conditions, a hat, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent.
Bring plenty of water and a brown bag lunch or snacks to enjoy along the way. Don’t forget your camera! You may also want a notepad to jot down notes.
Participants must sign a release of liability found here. 2017 Blank Liability Waiver Photo release_revAug17 Please print and bring it with you. One copy per person
