Want to hike in the summer without being in the blazing hot sun? Come with us as we explore nature under a ‘nearly’ full moon on Friday, August 19. Our trained docents will be your guides for the evening. We are trying to time the hike to see the sunset from the top of the hill, followed by the moonrise on the other side. The hike starts at 7:00pm.
The trail at our Big Hill Preserves has unusual rock formations, the beautiful Coon Creek, and panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley – all of which will look completely different at dusk and as the night grows darker. The moon light is sure to add to your visual experience.
For this hike, you’ll need to bring either a headlamp or a flashlight.
The hike is approximately 5 miles, and you should expect it to take 3 to 4 hours. We try to slow it down a bit for safety since part of the hiking occurs in the dark.
Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous with uphill and downhill travel, uneven ground and rough terrain. This could be a little more difficult as the evening grows darker.
This is a wilderness outing in a natural setting: there are no restrooms, benches, or water available. Please plan ahead and bring what you will need.
We suggest you wear sturdy shoes, wear clothing appropriate for the weather conditions, and bring a flashlight or headlamp. You may also want walking sticks if you have them. Bring plenty of water and snacks to enjoy along the way, and mosquito repellant. If you have a camera that takes low light pictures, bring it along too!
We have a “leave no trace” policy – if you pack it in, please pack it out.
Sorry, dogs are not allowed on our Preserves. We don’t recommend this hike for kids under age 12.
Participants must sign a release of liability which is available below. Please print and bring it with you.
The hike is free, but we do ask for a minimum donation of $10 per person. Your donation helps expand our trail system and keeps you informed of other upcoming events. We accept cash or checks at the event, or via credit card at https://www.placerlandtrust.org/donate/ .
The hike begins at 7:00pm in North Auburn. Directions will be automatically emailed after registration is complete (if you do not receive the directions your registration did not go through.) You may sign up for yourself and your immediate household only. Other guests are asked to register for themselves.
The deadline to sign up is the Thursday prior to the event.
