Come with us as we explore nature under the full moon on Saturday, April 4th starting at 5:30pm. Our trained docents will be your guides for the evening. They are trying to time the hike so you’ll see the sun set from one point, and then hike to the other side of the preserve to see the moon rise. For this hike, you’ll need to bring either a headlamp or a flashlight.
The trail at our Big Hill Preserves has unusual rock formations, the beautiful Coon Creek, and panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley – all of which will look completely different at dusk and as the night gets darker. The light of the full moon is sure to add to the experience.
Difficulty: moderate to strenuous with uphill and downhill travel, uneven ground and rough terrain. This could be a little more difficult as the evening grows darker.
The hike is approximately 5.5 miles, and will take 3-4 hours depending on the pace of the group.
This is a wilderness outing in a natural setting: there are no restrooms, benches, or water available. Please plan ahead and bring what you will need. We suggest you wear sturdy shoes, long pants, and clothing appropriate for the weather conditions. You will probably want jacket.
Bring water and snacks to enjoy along the way, and you may also want mosquito repellant. If you have a camera that takes low light pictures, bring it along too!
We have a “leave no trace” policy – if you pack it in, please pack it out.
Sorry, no dogs are allowed on our Preserves.
Participants must sign a release of liability which is available below. Please print and bring it with you.
We suggest a minimum donation of $10 per person which helps us expand our trail system and supports our docent program. We accept cash or checks at the event, or via credit card https://www.placerlandtrust.org/donate/ .
The event begins at 5:30pm in North Auburn. Directions will be emailed after registration. The deadline to sign up is Noon the Friday prior to the event.
