Taylor Ranch Preserve
Quick Facts:
- 321 acres of oak woodlands along Coon Creek
- Protected since April 2007 in partnership with the Trust for Public Land, with funds from the State of California, Placer County, the California Wildlife Foundation, and the Taylor Family
Conservation Connectivity
Placer Land Trust works with willing landowners and conservation partners to protect land that connects wildlife habitat, public recreation opportunities, and scenic open space. The area between the Bear River and Coon Creek contains some of the last roadless areas in western Placer County.
Oak Woodlands
The area between Coon Creek and the Bear River represents the largest contiguous area of oak woodlands remaining in Placer County. Approximately 331 species of wildlife inhabit Placer County’s oak woodlands including mountain lions, bobcats, several species of hawk, rodents, snakes, owls, and songbirds.
Wildlife Corridors
Large areas of intact wilderness provide critical habitat for larger animal species. The oak woodlands between Bear River and Coon Creek form an important north-south corridor complimenting the east-west corridors formed by the rivers and the adjoining riparian habitat. Taylor Ranch Preserve lies adjacent to Placer Land Trust’s Kotomyan Big Hill Preserve and the Liberty Ranch Big Hill Preserve, resulting in 802 acres of contiguous protected wilderness.
Recreational Trails
Healthy riparian zones provide critical habitat for a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic species while also contributing to water quality by filtering excessive nutrients and other pollutants before the water reaches the stream. Coon Creek and its riparian area supports fish, otters, frogs, snakes, and several species of songbird.
Agricultural Heritage
As part of our mission to sustain agriculture in Placer County, Placer Land Trust manages this property with livestock grazing. Grazing keeps invasive species down, makes room for native plants, and reduces fuel loads that can lead to wildfire.
