Reason Farms Environmental Preserve
Quick Facts:
- 227 acres along Pleasant Grove Creek north of Roseville
- Protected since August 2005 through Placer Land Trust’s West Placer Habitat Protection Program
Public-Private Partnership for Conservation and Restoration
The City of Roseville owns this land, and Placer Land Trust holds the Conservation Easement preventing development and promoting habitat restoration. Reason Farms is part of over 2,000 contiguous acres of permanently protected habitat and an additional 1,700 acres currently maintained as open space by the City of Roseville.
Grasslands
Native grasslands provide feeding grounds for Swainson’s hawk, listed as threatened by the State of California, and other native wildlife. Livestock graze on invasive plants reducing seed stock, keeping fuel loads down and making room for native species.
Oak Woodlands
Oak woodlands act as a natural transition zone from riparian to grasslands providing nesting sites and habitat for native birds and mammals and shade for grazing livestock.
Vernal Pools and Riparian Habitat
Pleasant Grove Creek forms a riparian corridor through Reason Farms used by great blue heron, egret, and trout. The City of Roseville is re-creating vernal pools, historically present on this property, which will provide habitat for the endangered fairy shrimp.
