Once or twice a year we offer specialty hikes that are educational in nature. Please join us on Saturday, November 12 at 9:00am for a special hike focusing on the “Geology of the Foothills”. Our Big Hill Preserves have unique and unusual rock formations, the gently flowing Coon Creek, and spectacular panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada foothills and Sacramento Valley.
Docents Karl Mertz and Sarah Roeske are trained geologists. Karl is a retired geology professor from Sac State & Sierra College and Sarah teaches and does research at UC Davis with a focus on fault zones. Docent Bob Niblack is a Hydro-geologist who spent many years working for the Department of Water Resources and knows a thing or two about the impacts of drought. These docents have many years of experience and amazing knowledge to share with you.
DISTANCE: The hike will be approximately 4+ miles, and may take 3-4 hours depending on the pace of the group and how many stops are made to look at the various rock formations along the way.
DIFFICULTY: Moderate to Strenuous with uphill and downhill travel, on uneven ground and rough terrain.
This is a wilderness outing in a natural setting: there are no restrooms, benches, or water available. Please plan ahead and bring what you will need.
We have a “leave no trace” policy – if you pack it in, please pack it out.
Sorry, NO dogs are allowed on our Preserves, unless service animals.
Children under age 8 are not recommended for this hike, but please use your discretion as you know your child best.
We suggest you wear sturdy shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather conditions, and a hat, sunscreen, and/or mosquito repellent.
Bring plenty of water and a brown bag lunch or snacks to enjoy along the way. Don’t forget your camera! You might also want a notepad to jot down some interesting information.
Participants must sign a release of liability which is available below. Please print and bring it with you.
This hike starts at 9:00am in North Auburn. You will receive a confirmation email with directions after completing the registration page. (if you do not receive the directions your registration did not go through.)
We suggest a minimum donation of $10 per person. Your donation helps expand our trail system and keeps you informed of other upcoming events. We accept cash or checks at the event, or you can donate online via credit card at http://www.placerlandtrust.org/donate/ .
The deadline to sign up is Noon the Friday prior to the event. You may sign up to bring family members living with you by adding their name on the registration form. We ask that guests not in your household register themselves.
