LIBERTY RANCH
BIG HILL PRESERVE

WILDLIFE HABITAT, GRAZING LAND,
AND PLANNED PUBLIC ACCESS

Working in partnership with willing landowners, Placer Land Trust purchased a conservation easement to permanently protect the 321-acre Liberty Ranch property in October 2007.

The property is located on Big Hill, dividing the Coon Creek and Bear River watersheds in the western Sierra Nevada foothills of Placer County. Named the "Liberty Ranch Big Hill Preserve", the property contains beautiful oak woodlands, granite rock outcroppings, seasonal streams, and habitat for numerous wildlife species. Big Hill offers panoramic views of the Central Valley, Sutter Buttes, Coast range, and Sierra Nevadas. The property lies within the largest unfragmented stretch of oak woodlands in Placer County, and protects a critical north-south wildlife migration corridor. The property adjoins two PLT preserves (the 160-acre Kotomyan Big Hill Preserve and the 321-acre Taylor Ranch Preserve), creating an 802-acre open space preserve for current and future generations.

CWF also provided PLT with endowment funds to ensure that PLT can monitor and enforce the terms of the conservation easement and provide permanent protection for this beautiful oak woodland preserve.

PLT and the landowners are working with Placer County to create a public trail across the property, linking up to the nearby Hidden Falls Regional Park by way of PLT's adjacent preserves within the next five years. PLT hopes to eventually expand this trail to connect Coon Creek and the Bear River.
