HOFMAN RANCH, LINCOLN

427-ACRE WORKING CATTLE RANCH
WITH VERNAL POOLS

As part of Placer Land Trust's West Placer Habitat Protection Program, PLT worked with the Hofman family to permanently preserve the Hofman Ranch in Lincoln.

The property is 457 acres in total, and lies along Doty Ravine northeast of the City of Lincoln. PLT acquired 427 acres of the ranch on April 1, 2005, and the Hofman family will retain 30 acres for their continued personal use.

The property will be permanently protected as both agricultural land and as critical vernal pool habitat. Scientific studies have proven that a moderate level of cattle grazing is beneficial for the health of vernal pool ecosystems, helping to reduce the invasion of non-native plants and ensure the propagation of threatened species such as the vernal pool fairy shrimp. Placer Land Trust leases cattle grazing rights on the property.

More information about the Hofman Ranch will be posted on this web page in the near future.

The mission of PLT's West Placer Habitat Protection Program is to work with willing landowners to preserve critical vernal pool habitat in western Placer County, with an emphasis on sustaining environmentally-friendly agricultural practices. Funding is provided by conveyance fees from home sales in the West Roseville Specific Plan area.
