Great Sierra River Cleanup

The next Great Sierra River Cleanup will be on
Saturday, September 15, 2012. Mark your calendars!

We are planning to have two locations again, and the sites will be selected a couple months prior to the event date. Please check back for more details in the upcoming months. We hope you'll be able to join us!

A big thanks goes out to all of our 2011 volunteers at the Canyon View and Codfish Falls sites!

Each year the Sierra Nevada Conservancy coordinates the Great Sierra River Cleanup in conjunction with Coastal Cleanup Day.  This event focuses on removing trash and restoring the health of waterways in the Sierra Nevada's. Placer Land Trust has participated since 2009.  Our volunteers removed 904 pounds of trash and 60 pounds of recycling from Canyon View Preserve in 2009. In 2010, Placer Land Trust hosted two sites and more than doubled the amount of trash we removed - a whooping 3,848 pounds of trash!  This year we hope to be as successful as we have in previous years, we look forward to seeing you out there.

Placer Land Trust was one of Sierra Nevada Conservancy’s 50 partner organizations who participated in the third annual Great Sierra River Cleanup.  The event took place on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 9am-12pm. Canyon View preserve and the surrounding area around the Codfish Falls Trail Preserve were our two cleanup sites this year. Collectively, the two sites pulled together over 30 volunteers to remove more than 1300 lbs of trash and recyclables. Some of our more interesting items found this year were a kayak and lawn chairs.

Although cleaning trash; glass bottles, cigarette butts, dirty socks and scrap metal, can be a dirty job; volunteers managed to fit in some recreational time by swimming in the North Fork American River to collect aluminum cans lying at the bottom. The Canyon View crew had volunteers of all ages, ranging from 2 – 72.

After cleaning the trail for nearly three hours, everyone was treated to a delicious lunches provided by Placer Land Trust from donations we received.
