Calling all Volunteers!
We are participating with the Fire Safe Council of of Nevada County by hosting an event for the annual Scotch Broom Challenge. Scotch broom is a highly aggressive non-native invasive weed species.
It was introduced to the United States as an ornamental and as packing material for cases of whiskey and beer from the British Isles, central and southern Europe. Scotch broom is highly flammable and the recent rain has spurred on the growth creating a “scotch broom forest” on our preserve.
To learn more about this invasive species, check out the Fire Safe Council website.
WHEN: Saturday, April 1, from 9:30am to Noon. We suggest you arrive by 9:15am to allow time to park and walk to the meeting location to get checked in.
WHERE: Placer Land Trust’s Canyon View Preserve, Auburn (details on where to meet will be emailed after you register to attend)
WHAT TO BRING: Work gloves, a reusable water bottle, closed toe shoes (no sandals or flip flops), hat or sunscreen, your completed liability waiver found here: 2017-blank-liability-waiver-photo-release One liability waiver per person, and kids under 18 need parent signature on the form. Please print it and bring it with you.
WHAT TO EXPECT: You will be helping pull and stack scotch broom to remove this invasive species from the Preserve. Expect to sweat a little and probably get dirty. Some walking will be involved on uneven ground. Volunteers should expect to walk about 1 to 1.5 miles total. You will be working off the trail where the ground could be muddy. Some risks include ticks and poison oak.
This family friendly event is open to anyone age 5 and up. (we’ll go easy on the little ones and not expect them to work as hard)
We have a “leave no trace” policy – if you pack it in, please pack it out.
Sorry, NO dogs are allowed on our Preserves, unless service animals.
Lunch will be provided at the end of the event for all registered volunteers.
We always appreciate donations. Your donation helps us continue our work and keeps you informed of other upcoming events. We accept cash or checks at the event, or you can donate online via credit card at http://www.placerlandtrust.org/donate/ .
You may sign up family members by adding their name below on the registration form. If you’re bringing kids, please indicate their age so we have an idea how many are coming.
